Marcus Elwood

9 years covering US horse racing wagering, ADW platforms, and pari-mutuel odds; formerly a daily fantasy analyst covering thoroughbred handicapping

I've been handicapping races and testing ADW apps for nine years, from $2 win tickets at Saratoga to superfecta boxes on Breeders' Cup weekend. On this site I share what I've learned placing real money bets, comparing licensed platforms firsthand, and tracking payouts through TwinSpires, TVG, and DRF Bets so you don't have to guess which app actually delivers.

I'm Marcus Elwood, and I've been betting on horses through licensed ADW platforms for about nine years. I started the same way most people do: confused at the window during a Kentucky Derby watch party, guessing at odds, and losing a $20 exacta box I didn't fully understand. This site exists so you don't repeat that.

What does this site cover?

Everything on How to Bet Horse Racing: the complete US beginner's guide is written from hands-on experience. I personally test platforms, read the terms, and track my own wagers as an entertainment budget — not a retirement strategy. I cover bet types, pari-mutuel math, legal ADW access by state, platform comparisons, and tax rules. All facts come from source material: regulators, operators, and industry filings.

Who is this site for?

Primarily US-based adults who are new to horse racing wagering or returning ahead of a big event. I keep the language plain. Most posts open with a direct answer, then explain the why. I write the way I wish someone had explained things to me before I burned $240 on a six-horse trifecta box.

How I handle responsible gambling

I treat every wager as an entertainment line item. When a session hits my preset loss limit, I stop. The National Council on Problem Gambling has solid self-assessment tools if you're ever unsure whether your play is still recreational. Must be 18+ (21+ in several states). Gambling problem? Call 1-800-GAMBLER.

A note on legal platforms and offshore risk

I only recommend licensed ADW operators. Online ADW is legal in roughly 40 states under the Interstate Horseracing Act. If a site accepts you despite your state prohibiting ADW, that's a red flag, not a perk. I explain this in detail on the offshore racebook risks page.

Editorial standards

No bonus amounts, wagering terms, or legal statuses are invented. Every figure I cite traces back to a regulator, operator terms page, or industry document. If I can't source it, I leave it out or note that it varies. Platform reviews reflect publicly available offer structures; always confirm current terms directly with the operator before depositing.
